Together with Benjamin he established a fictitious school – the University of Muri. Scholem returned to Germany in 1919, where he received a degree in Semitic languages at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He was in Bern in 1918 with Benjamin when he met Elsa (Escha) Burchhard, who became his first wife. He studied mathematical logic at the University of Jena under Gottlob Frege. In Berlin, Scholem befriended Leo Strauss and corresponded with him throughout his life. ![]() There he met Martin Buber, Shmuel Yosef Agnon, Hayim Nahman Bialik, Ahad Ha'am, and Zalman Shazar. In 1915 Scholem enrolled at the Frederick William University in Berlin (today, Humboldt University), where he studied mathematics, philosophy, and Hebrew. Scholem dedicated his book Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism ( Die jüdische Mystik in ihren Hauptströmungen), based on lectures 1938–1957, to Benjamin. They began a lifelong friendship that ended when Benjamin committed suicide in 1940 in the wake of Nazi persecution. Scholem met Walter Benjamin in Munich in 1915, when the former was seventeen years old and the latter was twenty-three. He studied Hebrew and Talmud with an Orthodox rabbi. His older brother was the German Communist leader Werner Scholem. Gerhard (Gershom) Scholem was born in Berlin to Arthur Scholem and Betty Hirsch Scholem. ![]() Thanks to Scholem's efforts, and those of his students and colleagues, this state of affairs would be significantly remedied after the end of the World Wars and the foundation of the modern state of Israel where Scholem worked as head librarian of the National Library in Jerusalem. Many other Jewish scholars assisted in this process of recovery once it was underway, but it is broadly recognized that Scholem initiated this process of textual and archival recovery and rebirth.Īs Scholem points out in his memoirs, the canon of sacred Jewish writings from the diaspora and the middle ages (re: " Kabbalah") had fallen into such a state of disrepair and oblivion-fragmented and effaced by persecutions from without as well as contortions, conversions and schisms from within Judaism-that many of the "finest writings." from the major currents of Jewish mysticism could only be found in long block quotations in antisemitic texts, where some "nincompoop who had quoted and translated the most wonderful, the most profound things," had assembled them "in order to decry them as blasphemies." (This was a strong, somewhat exaggerated statement for expressive effect that Scholem attributes to Ernst Bloch in his memoirs-but there he co-signs the sentiment and appropriates it as his own description of the state of affairs in other places.) Īfter generations of demoralization and assimilation in the European enlightenment, the disappointment of messianic hopes, the famine of 1916 in Palestine, and the catastrophe of the Final Solution in Europe Scholem gathered and reassembled these sacred texts from many of the archives that had been disarranged, orphaned, confiscated under Nazi rule or otherwise washed up in Genizah cataloging the flood of fragments and disordered, decontextualized manuscripts into an annotated and relatively organized sequence of texts available to scholars and seekers within the reception of this tradition. Scholem is acknowledged by the sages as the single most significant figure in the recovery, collection, annotation, and registration into rigorous Jewish scholarship of the canonical bibliography of mysticism and scriptural commentary that runs through its primordial phase in the Sefer Yetzirah, its inauguration in the Bahir, its exegesis in the Pardes and the Zohar to its cosmogonic, apocalyptic climax in Isaac Luria's Ein Sof that is known collectively as Kabbalah. Widely regarded as the founder of modern academic study of the Kabbalah, Scholem was appointed the first professor of Jewish mysticism at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Gershom Scholem ( Hebrew: גֵרְשׁׂם שָׁלוֹם) (5 December 1897 – 21 February 1982), was a German-born Israeli philosopher and historian.

![]() It seems like other medical related opportunities (EMS, shadowing, hospital volunteering, clinical admin, etc) would be much more important to my pre-PA endeavors than doing Bio research but is this the case? Do they even consider what your research background is on an application? ![]() ![]() I love Biology and would love to do something research related but am concerned about time. HOWEVER, my Bio professor is really pushing me to get involved with Bio research. I also want to spend the next few semesters balancing course work and medical related volunteering whenever possible. It's something I've been really wanting to be involved with for a while and figured it was great way to have hand on med. Although I am a Bio major, my current priority is getting EMT certified so that I can get involved with my local and campus EMS squads. So I am a sophomore at a relatively small liberal arts college. Thoughts?ģ) Telling me about all the instruments you play and how you did some really complex chemistry reasearch.thats all well and good, but I'm interested in why you want to be a PA, why you think you should be accepted and a then some about yourself. I don't know if being a dental hygienist counts as good HCE. I'm not sure if that would mean I am seriously lacking in the credentials to make it into this program. Though I will be volunteering at a hospital and shadowing a PA this semester, for the year after that all I will have time for is work and shadowing once a week. It will be about 3.3, perhaps a little higher, when I graduate with a BA in bio.Īfter I get my BA, for financial reasons, I will be working full-time for a year. I just am very overwhelmed by the Cornell name and feel like my GPA may not be enough to cut it. When I found out about what being a PA entailed and the flexibility it offers (in terms of specializing), I was much more excited about being a PA than I ever have been about dental school. I have been a dental hygienist for 3 years and thought I'd go into dental school, until I found out about this profession. I actually also would like to know of those with a GPA of 3.3 or lower who got into the program, what else did you do that made you stand out? I am very curious too about GPA and GRE scores. ![]() ![]() Window._dctk_guid_ = JSON. It genuinely built their business globally." Writing and release Robert Dodds, president of 19 Entertainment, commented about the collaboration: "They were smart in believing in the girls They got in early, by the time they actually wanted to run the activity, the girls were the biggest thing on the planet. In early 1997, the Spice Girls signed a multimillion-pound deal with the company to front its latest ad campaign, which had been expanded to 78 countries worldwide. Negotiations with Fuller started in October 1996, for a deal that initially only covered the UK and the rest of Europe. The agency subsequently approached Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO (AMV BBDO) in London with the marketing strategy for the endorsement deal, which was then presented to Pepsi. The sponsorship agency Broadcast Innovations conceived the idea to link the Spice Girls with PepsiCo's then upcoming advertising campaign. įrom the beginning of the Spice Girls, Fuller envisioned the group as their own particular brand, and soon after, they became involved in an unprecedented marketing phenomenon that led to a prolific number of merchandise and sponsorship deals, a situation that at the time "proved ground-breaking" in pop music. The album's third single, " 2 Become 1", topped the UK Singles Chart in December. On 4 November 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut studio album Spice, selling 1.5 million copies in the UK by the end of the year. ![]() In October, their second single " Say You'll Be There" debuted at number one in the UK. Following an international promotional campaign, the song became a commercial success across Asia, Europe and Oceania. On 8 July 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut single " Wannabe" in the United Kingdom, with it topping the UK Singles Chart for seven weeks. From this point on until the summer of 1996, the Spice Girls continued to write and record tracks for their debut album, set to be released at the end of 1996. The group considered a variety of record labels in London and Los Angeles, signing a deal with Virgin Records in July. In May 1995, the Spice Girls met with artist manager Simon Fuller, who signed them with 19 Entertainment. It was also added to the setlist of their 1998 Spiceworld Tour. ![]() The group performed the song for their first live concert, later released on video as Girl Power! Live in Istanbul (1998). The inclusion of "Move Over" as a track on Spiceworld garnered divisive opinions from music critics, while the song itself received a mixed reception for its production and lyrical content. The Spice Girls filmed three television ads using their own version of the song and later included it as a track on Spiceworld, while a one-track CD featuring a live performance of the song during the Istanbul concerts was released as a promotional single by Pepsi. The version is a dance-pop song with influences of pop-rock, which is thematically linked to the concepts of merchandising and consumerism. The Spice Girls co-wrote with Lane and Wood a new extended version of "Move Over", which was produced by Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard. Through Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, the Spice Girls signed an endorsement deal with Pepsi in early 1997, that consisted of the release of an exclusive CD single, TV commercials, on-can and bottle promotion and the group's first live concerts in Turkey. The song was originally co-written by Clifford Lane with Mary Wood as a jingle for PepsiCo's " GeneratioNext" advertising campaign and used in television ads released in January 1997. Preserving Oklahoma’s natural side has become of paramount importance to many of the state’s residents. In recounting lively anecdotes, and by focusing on tourist perceptions of everyday life in western cities, Gruen shows how these cities developed the economy of tourism to eventually encompass both the urban and the natural West. The unique terrain of Oklahoma has mystified and mesmerized visitors for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Western cities did not always live up to the marketing strategies of guidebooks, but the western cities’ fast pace and many novelties held extraordinary appeal to visitors from the East Coast and abroad. They thrust themselves into the noise, danger, and cacophony. Visitors relished the cities’ unfamiliar storefronts and advertising, public transit systems, ethnic diversity, and multiple dwellings in all their urban messiness. But Gruen’s research in diaries, letters, and traveler narratives shows that tourists were interested-as tourists usually are-in the unexpected encounters that characterize city life. Guidebooks made Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco seem like picturesque environments sprinkled with civilized buildings and refined people. Gruen pays particular attention to the contrast between the way these cities were promoted and the way visitors actually experienced them. Philip Gruen examines the ways in which tourists experienced Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco between 18, a period of rapid urbanization and accelerated modernity. Yet as people flocked to western cities, it was the everyday life that captured their interest-the new technologies, incessant clatter, and all the upheaval of modern metropolises. Contemporary travel brochures and guidebooks of the 1870s sold tourists on the spectacular scenery of the West, and depicted its cities as extensions of the natural landscape-as well as places where efficient business operations and architectural grandeur prevailed-all now easily accessible thanks to the relative comfort of transcontinental rail travel. Tourists started visiting the American West in sizable numbers after the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads were completed in 1869. ![]() Has everything you need in a state store.
